Sante Marie is a town in Marsica that is nestled between the Carseolani Mountains, not far from Tagliacozzo and Carsoli. This village is immersed in a natural fairy-tale landscape, as it lies in an uncontaminated natural environment, full of naturalistic surprises, such as the numerous caves, which for years have been the destination of a strong speleological tourism.
The territory of Sante Marie is in fact structured in an environment of calcareous rock, where the presence of various underground waterways produced the wonder of some beautiful caves. The uncontaminated nature of the territory is then guaranteed by the Grotte di Luppa Regional Nature Reserve.
In the 1950s, 60s and 70s Sante Marie was gradually depopulated due to an endemic economic crisis, but in recent years this village of the Marsican countryside is slowly repopulating, helped by its characteristics of history and popular tradition, that allow those who live there to live long and well, thanks to both the splendid climate and the excellent cuisine. Thanks to the presence of the Rome-Pescara railway which serves it directly and the proximity of the A24 and (though a little further away) A25 motorways, Sante Marie is easily accessible from Rome and Pescara, as well as from their airports.
In the past, the village was inhabited by Aequi and then for a long time it was under the domination of Rome. Over time Sante Marie has become one of the most important religious centers of the Marsica. The many churches in the village and its hamlets are an indelible sign of this, true treasures of art and culture. For all lovers of trekking the town is very suitable for walking on foot, thanks to the presence of numerous paths that surround the village, but it is also fantastic for horseback riding, which are even better for appreciating its many natural features.
To be able to appreciate the characteristics of this village, however, one day is not enough, it takes more, at least four or five, otherwise you can hardly grasp the magic of this corner of Marsica.
