Avezzano is a centre that will be a real discovery for many who know little or nothing at all about this town and Marsica, which on the other hand are located only an hour’s drive from Rome. Avezzano and Marsica are often considered to be unattractive or inhospitable and perhaps even a little “wild” places, just because they are little known. As a matter of fact, it is quite the opposite. Avezzano is not only a hospitable place and where you can eat very well, but above all a modern centre and with a constantly growing “movida”, especially in the summer.

Considering in this case only the municipality of Avezzano, we have numerous sports activities that can be carried out outdoors. In the municipal area there is the territory of the Mount Salviano reserve, which through a pleasant and comfortable ascent with a series of hairpin bends enables lovers of motorcycle or bicycle rides to admire a beautiful panorama. Continuing to follow the various hairpin bends we finally reach the Sanctuary of the Madonna di Pietraquaria, greatly revered by the local population. Still within Mount Salviano, there are numerous structures that facilitate outdoor sports activities.

In addition to Mount Salviano, there is the Pinewood Park in the north of the city, which once housed the concentration camp for prisoners of war. Here the park winds through various paths and is well equipped for sports activities of any kind, from cross-country running to swimming and tennis. Here are in fact the facilities of the municipal swimming pool and the tennis courts. The sporting activity of the bicycle is one of the most cared for in the city thanks to a large number of cycling routes. Also noteworthy are the routes that can be taken in the nearby villages of the capital such as Antrosano, San Pelino, Paterno or Cese.

The hamlets of San Pelino and Paterno, which are located north of Avezzano, are placed in an area rich in vegetation with very beautiful places to observe. Instead the hamlet of Antrosano, placed on one side of Pettorino Hill, is in a splendid panoramic position, with many trails very easy to climb both on foot and by bike, which, thanks to its position, make it an ideal place for excursions in the nature. It is not a case that in May the area is often involved in cycling competitions.

On the front of the nightlife, Avezzano is certainly the city centre where most of the main places of Marsica are concentrated, and this is true both for restaurants and for cafes and clubs in general. Often in the summer, several places organize themed parties that increase the charge of the local nightlife.

Not many people know that, but Avezzano is full of youth dedicated to the art of acting and music. Here in recent years several theatre and music companies have been born. This phenomenon was certainly favoured by the birth of the Teatro dei Marsi in the 2000s, which later became the city’s main artistic centre.

We conclude this article by saying that although Avezzano is the capital of Marsica and therefore the starting point for many tourist routes, it is itself, with all its municipal territory, rich on the artistic and cultural level, having several museums, venues and other interesting places, which make it an ideal place for a permanent vacation.
