– Introduction and location of Marano
Marano dei Marsi is a hamlet within the municipality of Magliano dei Marsi, with a population of approximately 40 people. The village is situated at an elevation of 925 meters above sea level on Mount La Costantina, part of the Carseolani Mountains range. It lies right at the foot of Mount Faito (1,455 meters above sea level), occupying a commanding position overlooking the Salto Valley—home to the Salto River, which originates nearby in the Piani Palentini area from the confluence of the Imele River and the Rafia stream.

From Marano, one has a clear view of both the Carseolani Mountains and the Velino-Sirente range; the latter is dominated by Monte Velino, whose massive bulk towers over a large part of the Marsica region. The view of Monte Velino from Marano offers an unparalleled panorama.

For me, this alone is enough to understand that Marano dei Marsi is immersed in a fairytale-like natural setting—one that, however, needs to be cherished and appreciated. Indeed, Marano is a village that has witnessed a great deal over its nearly thousand-year history, and today—despite a sharp decline in its population—it remains a dreamlike place.

Every detail of this place would warrant a dedicated description; indeed, the village’s most striking feature is the harmonious whole it forms—ranging from the castle ruins and surrounding buildings to the pristine natural landscape in which it is immersed. From an urban planning perspective, both the old village and the new section—built near the old Church of Saints Peter and Paul—blend into a magnificent ensemble, creating a sense of urban continuity that feels as though it has always existed just this way.

Clearly, it hasn’t always been this way, but the village is truly beautiful from every angle; the sight of the settlement set against the backdrop of the Velino-Sirente mountain range evokes a powerful emotion. You have to come and see it for yourself—no matter how beautiful or panoramic the photos may be, they cannot replace an actual visit. The villages of the Marsica region are all lovely, each with its own unique corners and characteristics, yet Marano—despite its small size—has a special ability to stir the emotions.

Here, the surrounding nature reveals itself in all its power; thanks to the significant presence of the Velino-Sirente Regional Park, it remains unspoiled, ensuring a very high level of environmental quality.
