TURISMO NELLA MARSICA (ENG)

Marsica is the western area of Abruzzo, which borders in the west with Lazio and is perfectly in the middle between the Tyrrhenian and the Adriatic Seas.

Marsica has its geographical heart in the Piana del Fucino, a former lake until 1876 and now a rich agricultural plain. This huge flat area is surrounded by a crown of mountains, many of which rise above 2,000 m.

The Velino – Sirente mountain range is the most important of Marsica and rises up to around 2,500 m in height with Mount Velino. The area has an extremely precious and unique natural heritage, which includes numerous reserves and natural parks. Outstanding among these is the wonderful National Park of Abruzzo, now almost 100 years old, which has its beating heart in the Pescasseroli area.

Marsica offers a very rich context of landscapes, including besides the high mountains also several valleys, such as the Valle del Giovenco, the Valle Roveto or the Vallelonga, and several flat areas such as the aforementioned Piana del Fucino, the Piani Palentini and the Piana del Cavaliere.

In this mountain context, ski resorts, among the most modern in Italy, such as the Ovindoli, Pescasseroli and Cappadocia facilities, cannot be missed.

However, even though nature is the most important feature, its in only a part of the numerous attractions, which offers the Marsica territory, very rich in culture and history.

The earthquake that occurred in 1915 had destroyed much of the area’s artistic and monumental heritage. But thanks to a fruitful restoration work it was possible to recover many of the ancient structures that were destroyed in the earthquake.

Today Marsica offers numerous monumental attractions, starting with the numerous early medieval churches such as the church of San Pietro in Alba Fucens, or the early Christian basilica of San Cesidio in Trasacco. In addiction to this, the territory includes a very wide range of medieval castles and Renaissance palaces, present in the numerous Marsican villages, starting with the majestic Celano and Balsorano castles.

From an historical point of view, in this territory vestiges from all ages are present, from the pre-Roman era with the archaeological sites of the ancient Marsi people of Luco dei Marsi, Amplero and Milonia, to Roman times with the site of Alba Fuces, the most important archaeological site in Abruzzo, to arrive at the medieval and Renaissance period, beautifully represented by the town of Tagliacozzo an authentic Renaissance artistic treasure chest of Marsica.

The area, easily reachable by car through the A24 and A25 motorways and by train through the railway lines that cross it, lends itself well to a sedentary holiday, offering in addition to nature and culture a varied possibility of montain sports in winter, such as skiing, as well as in summer, such as horseback riding, climbing, trekking, mountain biking.
