SANTE MARIE – COSA FARE (ENG)

Sante Marie, thanks to the unique characteristics of the caves present in its territory, has become over the last few years the destination of a substantial speleological tourism, which tends more and more to organize and structure itself. In addition to this, on the sporting and recreational level the territory of Sante Marie is full of trails immersed in the chestnut woods, belonging to the Regional Natural Reserve of the Luppa Caves. The presence of this Reserve offers unique opportunities for lovers of country trekking or horse riding, another sport on the rise in the municipal area.

As for country trekking, Sante Marie organizes one of the most popular events in Marsica, that is the Way of the Brigands. The trail is completely marked and follows in the footsteps of the Brigands of the Cartore Band. This route includes 7 stages in 7 days with return to Sante Marie.

The visit to Sante Marie cannot fail to include a tour of its many hamlets, each of which offers its own characteristics. The first village to visit is undoubtedly Santo Stefano, with its mother church of the same name dating back to the 12th century. In the territory of the village there is a small archaeological site of Aequan-Roman age. The walk through the hamlets of Sante Marie continues with Castelvecchio, an ancient medieval town, where the ruins of an ancient castle are found and where the church of San Martino, dating back to the 12th century, is located.

Then we arrive in Scanzano, a town that rises on the slopes of Mount Faito at 896 m. Nearby is a Roman archaeological site set on a previous Aequan vicus. Besides, on the highest part of the village there are the ruins of an ancient castle placed in visual continuity with the Tagliacozzo castle and other neighboring ones.

The village, however, offers a view of the entire surrounding area, which defining as a postcard is to say the least. In general, every part of Sante Marie is a real treasure chest that can only be discovered with a permanent holiday of a few days.
