The village of Cerchio is a beautiful village that rises at 834 m a.s.l. on the slopes of Monte Corbarolo, close to Monte Sirente and on the north-east side of the Piana del Fucino. Mount Corbarolo is part of the Velino-Sirente chain, therefore Cerchio falls within the area of ​​the Sirente – Velino regional natural park.

The town is 117 km from Rome and 18 from Avezzano, the main center of the Marsica. The town is easily reachable both from the nearby A25 motorway and by train, served by the Rome-Pescara railway line, which has its own station in the town.

According to tradition, Cerchio rises around an old theater, now destroyed, which the Romans would have built to celebrate the Emperor Claudius after, in 51 d. C., manages to drain the Fucino lake, even if partially. Historically, the town was formed in the Carolingian period, from the merger of thirteen villages in the area and would later be part of the County of Celano. The country has always maintained its economic level with agriculture and this became even more important when, after the drying up carried out in the mid-nineteenth century by the banker Torlonia, many people from the village of Cerchio became farmers of the new and rich Fucino plain.

The old town has often suffered over the centuries from various local and regional earthquakes, but it has almost always survived without ever having too much damage. But this has not been repeated with the Gioia dei Marsi earthquake in 1915, which razed to the ground the entire village, producing even 300 deaths. After this huge catastrophe, the town, albeit with a lot of effort, recovered by rebuilding itself completely, including the historic center, which we managed to rebuild from scratch, but well safeguarding the previous urban and monumental history it had so far.

Today Cerchio is a country in full development, that has adapted itself to the tourist level by converting many ancient structures into small hotels and developing a rich organization of cultural events. Certainly, however, one of the greatest strengths of the town is the natural aspect that surrounds it, which is of great faunistic and floristic value, but above all morphological with a grandiose view of the Fucino plain.
