Roccacerro is a small hamlet of 70 inhabitants in the municipality of Tagliacozzo, in the province of L’Aquila, in the part called Marsica.

Roccacerro is a town with clear medieval origins, likely founded in the 11th century by the Counts of Marsi. The town’s urban layout is splendid, with its narrow streets tumbling up and down. Spending even a few hours in a country like this is a fulfilling experience, because it recharges you, and that’s truly worth it.

The town is located near Mount Bove, on a hill 1,170 meters above sea level, offering magnificent views of the Marsica region. The town is easy to reach, just 8 km from Tagliacozzo. Roccacerro is a mountain town, located at 1,170 meters above sea level, close to Monte Bove, within the Monti Carseolani mountain range. Roccacerro overlooks the Ara dei Pali plain below, where the ancient Tiburtina Valeria road passes.

The town of Roccacerro stands out for its high environmental value, thanks to the presence of vast expanses of oak and chestnut forests. The gentle profile of this chain of small mountains makes for a picture-postcard landscape.

The Carseolani Mountains are a small chain of low mountains located on the border between Abruzzo and Lazio. If I were a tourist, the first thing I’d do would be to enjoy the splendid natural panorama that opens up before entering the village. This panorama is also visible from various points in the village.

A village that has retained a typically medieval structure, despite earthquakes and the passage of time. It is characterized by narrow streets that continually ascend and descend, and the medieval structure of the village is certainly another thing to admire as soon as you enter the town.

This characteristic is evident everywhere and offers a true journey back in time. During the Second World War, the village was bombed, destroying part of the historic center, which has since been splendidly rebuilt.

Entering the village you can admire the church of Santa Maria degli Angeli, an ancient church dating back to the 18th century, located at the highest point of the village, built by converting the old castle, ruined and abandoned, into a religious building.

Despite the many alterations made over the centuries, especially in the 20th century, the church’s interior has retained a typical 18th-century structure, with decorations and various period features that are worth admiring.

After visiting the church, we continue our tour of the village, admiring the many urban views of this small town. Roccacerro is a village where history is palpable everywhere, and where one gets the sense that despite its small size, every house and every stone has a story to tell.

Roccacerro is also an excellent base for excursions into the surrounding nature, rich in flora and fauna, but above all, offering stunning views. If you enjoy walking amidst nature, there are beautiful trails that start from the village and wind through the surrounding woods, quickly reaching the nearby and beautiful village of Marsia, located at the foot of Mount Midia, one of the peaks of the Carseolani Mountains.

Roccacerro is certainly one of the least popular tourist destinations due to its relatively unknown location, but it is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful mountain villages in the municipality of Tagliacozzo. Its unique location is near one of Europe’s largest beech forests, near Marsia.

If you love wandering through the woods, breathing in fresh air, and immersing yourself in nature, Roccacerro is the ideal place. Its oak and chestnut forests nestled in gentle mountains make it a perfect retreat for experiencing nature and reconnecting with yourself.
